Dear Big Black,

I think the term "black comedy" is a fairly well recognized and respected genre in its own right. You can't tell me that Dave Chappelle’s comedy show is not influenced heavily by African American culture. I think that's why people call it "black comedy". It's not a condescending term; it’s simply a way of specifically identifying the genre. If you can think of another name for this genre, I'm all ears. However, just calling it ‘Comedy’ is simply inadequate, because it is too vague of a term.

You are right the world is not black and white. It is a very complex and diverse place. However, for the sake of efficiency EVERYONE (yes even you) uses stereotypes as a way of identifying and addressing the similarities and differences between very large, diverse populations. I’m not just talking about populations of people.

Anonymously posting insulting and inflammatory statements is, at the very least, irresponsible. In a way, by doing so you are cheating yourself. When you comment anonymously, you remove yourself from the filters that you use everyday to interact with society in a civil way. When your name (even your nickname) is tied to your comments and actions, then you are more likely to act in a responsible manner. I doubt you are so reckless with your words in public. In many ways, you have been your own worst enemy in this argument.

Words to live by: If you can’t sign your name to what you are writing, then question your motives for writing it.

Dear Big Black,

You are absolutely right. I don't know you. All that I know about you is what you've chosen to write.

What was trying to say is that I’m pretty sure you are not as brazen as your posts make you sound. I’m really not trying to insult you by saying that! In a sense, it is meant as a compliment.

I think if we make any mistakes, those mistakes should involve assuming the best in other people. I think it is honorable to err on the side of mutual respect for each other as human beings. Everyone (you and I included) who has posted here this afternoon is a real person with real feelings. Likewise, I think your point of view is as relevant as anyone’s. I understand that I have not lived your life, and that you have not lived mine. That’s why I believe everyone can benefit from mutual understanding and open dialogue. Hey, I’ve got to head out for my Friday night plans, but I hope you have a good weekend (I’m serious).

Fever, if you've got time to read it, then I've got time to write it. Thanks for tuning in! ;-)
